Phil Voon and Give us a Goo Photography

My wife, Patricia, who works as my assistant for weddings and events, would say:

“If he didn't take photos he wouldn't be able to remember where he was or who he hung around with that day."

There’s an element of truth to that comment, as cliché as it may sound; photos are worth more than a thousand words to me.  An image may have only captured 1/1000 of a second but if taken well, in the right light, at the right time, it becomes a story to be displayed and treasured over time.

That’s what Give us a goo Photography is about, to tell more than a thousand words by providing a tailored service to freeze those precious points in your life, so that they may be re-lived for a lifetime. It took me years of working within the photo industry to confidently provide customers with photographs that they will be proud off to own.

I graduated with an Honours Degree in Photography from DIT Temple Bar in 2001. My final year exhibition was hosted in the National Photographic Gallery and also displayed as street art in central Dublin.

For the next two years, I worked with many of Ireland's finest photographers as an assistant and photographer for weddings, portraits and public relations.  I’ve also worked in design and layout at one of the top photographic laboratories in Dublin and spent a considerable amount of time in the near extinct darkroom.

In 2003, I set out to do voluntary work in Nepal.  For 4 months, I documented both the working and private lives of those behind the Rural Community Development Programme of Nepal whilst assisting the organisation.  This was where my reportage style began to take shape and I developed a plethora of skills on how to take natural portraits of children and adults without interfering in their day to day lives. During my time in Nepal, I made a number of limited edition prints which were sold back in Ireland in aid of the volunteer programme.

I spent the remainder of that year developing my skills as a travel and stock photographer across India, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore before settling in Japan where I taught English at a government primary school north of Tokyo. Intermittently returning home to do some commercial work and erh, see the family.  After 3 years of photographing life as a foreigner in Japan, I had a body of work that was commissioned by the Embassy of Japan and exhibited at the Filmbase Gallery in March 2008 as part of a collection of photographs from Japan.

In 2009 I won a camera for my clients in the Kodak Wedding & Portrait Photographer UK & Ireland. The winning image was published in the Masters Photographers Association November Issue. Needless to say, Catriona & Keith were delighted with the prize. Later on in the year I was voted within the Top Six Wedding Photograpahers by brides & grooms from www.weddingsonline.ie - Thanks again to everyone who voted for me!

My goal is to build an extensive portfolio of portraiture, weddings, events and landscapes from not only Ireland but also from across the world. The gallery section is just a mere preview of the most recent photographs taken over the last six years. I love taking photos. Whether they are photos taken for the media or photos to be hung above your fireplace, nothing gives me more pleasure than being able to present to you a collection of photographs that everyone enjoys viewing again and again.

Go on, give us a goo... these people did at weddingsonline.ie
